A total of at least 45 hours of pre-program field experience is required and MUST be completed by the close of the application period. Candidates who have not completed their field work by the time they submit their application, should provide an unsigned form, which documents that this requirement is “in progress” of being completed. Once completed, candidates then submit the signed form.

The field experience must comply with the following guidelines:

  • 45 hours must be spent with a group of children that align with the credential that is being obtained.

    • Multiple Subject Credential Candidates would complete field work hours with a group of children who are between the ages of 4 ½ and 11 years of age.

    • Single Subject Credential Candidates would complete field work hours with a group of children who are between the ages of 12 and 17 years of age.

    • Ed Specialist Credential Candidates would complete field work hours with a group of students who are between the ages of 5 and 21 years of age.

  • One-on-one observation hours will not count towards this requirement.

  • Observation must include an educational component. The students must be engaged in a learning activity. This activity can be sports, arts and crafts, dance, etc.

  • Hours must be completed within the past two years.

Observation that is not done in a classroom should first be approved by Credentials Office to ensure it will meet the State guidelines.

Contact the Credentials Office if hours were completed in more than one place for instructions on what is accepted as proof.

Please complete Verification of Field Experience form and submit with the program application.  Please contact the Credentials Office if you have any questions.
