Professional Learning for Current Teachers

We offer a variety of courses, certificates, and programs for current  TK-12 educators to add credentials, authorizations, and to grow professionally. Some of these opportunities are fully funded. Email CSSE Department Chair, Dr. Ed Lyon, for more info. 

Add a Single Subject Credential in a Specific Content Area

TK-12 Teachers with a Preliminary or Clear Credential can add a (or another)   Single Subject Credential by…

  • Meeting the Subject Matter Competence Requirement for the desired subject area (usually through CSET) AND BY
  • Completing  the subject specific section for EDSS 444: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. These sections are only offered during in the Fall semester. If you are no longer a SSU student, you can take the course through the School of Extended and International Education's Open University. 

TK-12 Special Education Teachers with a Preliminary or Clear Credential can add a (or another)   Single Subject Credential by…

  • Meeting the Subject Matter Competence Requirement for the desired subject area (usually through CSET) AND BY
  • Applying to the Single Subject Credential Program. You can get many of the courses and potentially the edTPA and some of the clinical practice  experience  waived (depending on credential type and teaching experience). 

Add a Foundational Level Math or Foundational Level General Science Credential (free)

Participate in the hands-on, minds-on Foundational Level Math or Foundational Level General Science Preparation Institute. Courses offered during the summer and through the school year to prepare you to (1) pass the CSET in Foundational Level Math or Foundational Level General Science and (2) complete the Content Method (EDSS 444) requirement. Become Qualified to Teach Computer Science (free)

Through our new Computer Science Supplemental Authorization, you’ll take computer science courses designed for teachers to qualify you to teach intro computer science. See more details on the Current Practicing Teachers webpage.

Incorporate Making into your TK-12 Classroom (free)

Take our 3 courses in Spring and Fall and earn a Maker Education Certificate. Classes held at the Sonoma State Maker Space and other locations around the North Bay. See more details on the Current Practicing Teachers webpage.

Add a Bilingual Authorization in Spanish (scholarships available) and Support Biliteracy Integration

Take our 3 courses to add a Bilingual Authorization (in Spanish) to your credential. We currently have scholarships available to support registration fees. You can also participate in the Biliteracy and Content Area Integrated Preparation (or BCAIP) Project, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. See more info on our BCAIP webpage.

Add a M.A. in Education

We have a Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning concentration where you advance your knowledge and leadership in  Educational Technology, Reading and Literacy, Special Education, Content Area Pedagogy, or other areas of emphasis. Up to nine units from a credential program can count toward the degree requirements.

Adding a Single Subject Credential to an Education Specialist Credential

  • Meet Subject Matter Competence Requirement for the desired subject area (usually through CSET)
  • You will still need to apply for and complete the Single Subject Credential Program. However, most candidates who already possess an educational specialist credential can get coursework and sometimes even the edTPA performance assessment substituted/waived.
